HSE University in Nizhny Novgorod is about friends and support. I always feel empathy and a certain unity, even though we study in different buildings and at different faculties. HSE University and Nizhny Novgorod are open to everyone. I see how the city is developing, and I want to develop together with it.

For the 800th anniversary of the city, students prepared some educational projects, including joint projects with the Nizhny Novgorod State Art Museum, as well as projects aimed at the improvement and development of urban infrastructure.

Denis Fomenkov, Deputy Director of HSE University in Nizhny Novgorod, explained that despite the importance of so-called ‘hard skills’, soft skills are what gives a person the opportunity to move on, to grow in their professional field. It is these skills—the ability to work in a team, to present the results of your labour—that project work helps develop.

When working with projects, students develop cognitive, social, and emotional competencies that are highly valued by employers. Any project always comes with a high degree of uncertainty, a collision with life to some extent. If you have these competencies, your career opportunities are almost limitless.

‘HSE University graduates are in the lead both in terms of demand among employers and in terms of salaries,’ summed up Anna Blyakhman, Director of HSE University in Nizhny Novgorod. ‘We are the first-choice university for the most talented and active young people.’

As part of the open day, HSE University in Nizhny Novgorod also held games, interactive activities and workshops that reflect the key features of educational programmes—interdisciplinarity, a non-standard approach to presenting material, and the development of project work skills.

Teachers of the Philology and Fundamental and Applied Linguistics bachelor’s programmes held the workshop ‘Humanities Detective’, where two teams of participants—philologists and linguists—tried to restore a stanza from Eugene Onegin.

Design industry experts and teachers from the HSE Art and Design School in Nizhny Novgorod held workshops in which participants created real works: with Grigory Khromov, Creative Director of the Khrom branding agency, visitors developed a font branded packaging design in just half an hour; at the workshop by Lyubov Kotlyarova, Academic Supervisor of the HSE Art and Design School, they developed three music covers for their favourite tracks; while Elena Roitenberg, a teacher of typography and type, helped children draw a souvenir card with an inscription made using calligraphy.

At the end of the Open Day, there was a small brass concert featuring members of the orchestra of the Pushkin State Academic Opera and the Ballet Theatre La Voce Strumentale. The artists presented a medley programme curated specially for the event and comprising modern popular melodies and masterpieces of classical music.

Angelina, grade 10, Nizhny Novgorod

HSE University has a great atmosphere. I often take part in olympiads, including those held by HSE University. I love its programmes—they train specialists who will definitely be in demand in the future. I plan to apply to the International Bachelor’s in Business and Economics because I want to engage myself in business and communications, and I also love the teachers there.

Svetlana, grade 11, Kirov

I plan to apply to the Computer Science and Technologies programme this year, so I came to meet the teachers and find out the details of admission. And since I am here, I also participated in several workshops. I really liked the ‘Journey to Australia’ linguistic quest; I learned a lot about Australian English and the culture of this country and continent.

Alina, grade 10, Semenov

I came to HSE University to decide on an area of study, to decide where to go, and I already understand that I want to study on the Digital Marketing programme; I like practical work, and this programme seems very practice-oriented to me.

The Nizhny Novgorod region has been actively developing over the past few years, and HSE University has been closely involved in this thanks to the efforts of students, graduates, and teachers. Currently, an IT campus project has been launched in Nizhny Novgorod; it will fully meet the challenges and business needs of the times. All these changes require specialists with a unique set of hard and soft skills, creative thinking, a broad outlook and a love for Nizhny Novgorod—the city of sunsets at the confluence of the Oka and the Volga, an industrial, cultural and educational centre.
