Art and Design School Announces ‘Parajanov—100: Collage / Poster’ Contest

The HSE University Art and Design School and the Russian-Armenian (Slavonic) University, in collaboration with the Sergei Parajanov Museum and the Artists' Union of Armenia, have announced an open contest dedicated to the centenary of Sergei Parajanov’s birth. The contest starts on March 7.

Sergei Parajanov (1924–1990) was an outstanding film director, screenwriter, and artist whose filmography includes Shadows of Forgotten Ancestors (1965), The Colour of Pomegranates (1968), Ashik Kerib (1988), and more.

Sergei Parajanov left an impressive artistic legacy of drawings, collages, assemblages, installations, mosaics, and other works. Many of them have been donated and are kept in the Memorial House in Yerevan, while others are in private collections. In memory of Sergei Parajanov and in honour of the centenary of his birth, we are announcing the PARADJANOV—100 open contest in two categories: ‘COLLAGE’ and ‘POSTER’.

About the Contest

There are two contest categories:

  • Collage
  • Poster

Anyone interested in participating can submit a project online.
The deadline for the Collage category is April 23, while the deadline for the Poster category is June 16 (both dates inclusive).

    Exhibition of finalists' works

The winners’ works will be exhibited in Yerevan at the Sergei Parajanov Museum, the Artists' Union of Armenia, and in the urban environment in May–August 2023. In addition, the winners in each category will receive cash prizes.

Prizes

The total prize fund for each category is 150,000 rubles:

 First place—75,000 rubles
 Second place—50,000 rubles
 Third place—25,000 rubles

Collage Category

Collage is a fine art and graphic design technique used throughout the twentieth century by influential artists such as Georges Braque and Pablo Picasso, as well as the Russian masters Alexander Rodchenko, Vera Stepanova, Gustav Klutsis, El Lissitzky, and many other artists of the classical avant-garde.

In the 21st century, collage remains one of the most significant techniques in fine art and design. Works made in collage are accepted in this category with no restrictions on graphic genre. Artists and designers, animators, motion and digital artists are welcome to apply. The only restriction is the compulsory use of collage and/or assemblage techniques in the work.

Poster Category

Works in the poster genre are accepted in this category. Possible topics include:

  • Alternative film posters for Sergei Parajanov's films or films about Sergei Parajanov. For inspiration, we suggest getting acquainted with the director's complete filmography. Posters must contain:

— the name of the film
— the director's name

  • Poster for the centenary of Sergei Parajanov’s birth. Posters must contain:

— the name Sergei Parajanov
— the number 100

Contest Jury

  • Igor Gurovich — designer, artist, and Academic Supervisor of the Bachelor's in Communication Design at the HSE University Art and Design School in Yerevan.
  • Anna Lorenz — Director of MEDIAPOLIS, journalist, philologist, editor and writer.
  • Lilit Meliksetyan — Head of the Department of Russian and World Literature and Culture at RAU, literature expert, translator, creator and curator of the Art Aquarium exhibition project.
  • Anait Mikaelyan — Director of the Sergei Parajanov Museum (Yerevan).
  • Petr Nemoy — film director, New Anthropology researcher and futurologist.
  • Suren Safaryan — artist, Chair of the Artists' Union of Armenia.
  • Mitya Harshak — designer, founder and Editor-in-Chief of Projector magazine, Head of Communication Design at HSE University.

ADCR Awards: HSE University Wins in Ten Nominations

In early October, the award ceremony for the winners of ADCR Awards, a Russian professional competition in creativity, design and advertising, took place. This year, all the prizes in the Graphic Design/Product Design category were taken by HSE students. Additionally, the HSE Art and Design School has once again been named the School of the Year, and Leonid Slavin has been recognised as the tutor of the year. In 2024, participants submitted a record 649 works to the competition, of which 84 received awards in various categories.

GRADUATION'24: HSE Art and Design School at the Zaryadye Exhibition

On October 11, 2024, the third exhibition GRADUATION'24 opened at the Parking Gallery of Zaryadye Park. More than 200 promising artists from 22 Moscow institutions are participating in the event. ‘Intriguing Collaboration’: HSE Student Works Displayed at Yandex Museum

Last year, HSE University and the team at Yandex Museum launched their first joint competition, ‘New Life of Familiar Things,’ involving students from various fields at the HSE Art and Design School. The winners' works are now displayed at the Yandex Museum. The HSE News Service interviewed the winners about their innovative design and implementation.

‘New Life of Familiar Things’: Exhibition of Student Projects at Yandex Museum

On July 3, 2024, the Yandex Museum on Paveletskaya in collaboration with the HSE Art and Design School opened an exhibition showcasing familiar objects that have been given new forms, functions, and meanings. The exhibition features the projects of finalists from a competition organised by the HSE Art and Design School and the Yandex Museum. Visitors can explore works created by young designers and talented students of the HSE Art and Design School, who have reimagined familiar objects in the context ofmodern life.

International Competition of Short Videos about Cities Is Underway

The Moscow City Tourism Committee and HSE Art and Design School invite young directors, animators, cameramen, and other authors working with video to participate in the International Competition of Short Videos about Cities. The contest is organised on the platform of HSE Art and Design School and the Creative City Project of the Institute of Creative Industries in the framework of the ‘Territory of the Future’ Moscow forum and festival.

Season Eight of HSE CREATIVE OPEN Competition Begins

HSE CREATIVE OPEN international online competition of the HSE Art and Design School opens the summer season featuring new categories: ‘Visual Research,’ ‘Game Design,’ ‘Motion Design,’ ‘Poster,’ and ‘Digital Product.’

HSE ART GALLERY 2.0: Relaunch and New Space at the Winzavod

HSE ART GALLERY, which was established in 2018, is launching a new exhibition area. This second gallery will be in Winzavod, one of the largest private centres for contemporary art in Russia. The art space on Paveletskaya will become a place for implementing commercial projects and housing exhibitions by HSE Art and Design students and graduates.

HSE University and Pobeda Airlines Launch Joint Competition

HSE Art and Design School, in collaboration with the Pobeda Airlines, has announced the start of a competition to create a new uniform design for flight attendants and representatives of the airline. Young professional designers, as well as students over 18 years old studying at Russian universities in full-time and part-time programmes in the field of ‘Design and Fashion,’ will have the opportunity to showcase their talent.

HSE University and Adyghe State University Launch Digital Ethnolook International Contest

The HSE Centre for Language and Brain and the Laboratory of Experimental Linguistics at Adyghe State University (ASU) have launched the first Digital Ethnolook International Contest in the Brain Art / ScienceArt / EtnoArt format. Submissions are accepted until May 25, 2024.

‘The Goal of the Contest Is to Select Bold Ideas Aimed at Fostering a More Equitable Global Development’

HSE Vice Rector, Head of the BRICS Expert Council–Russia and Co-chair of the BRICS Civil Forum Victoria Panova, and Dean of the HSE Faculty of Humanities and Chair of the Contest Jury Felix Azhimov, announced the primary objectives of the contest, its format and potential participants during a press conference at TASS. Nationals from the BRICS countries, aged 18 to 45, are eligible to apply for participation in the contest. The jury will select ten winners, three of whom will be given the opportunity to attend the BRICS Civil Forum in Moscow in person.
