At the end of February, the HSE University Cultural Centre hosted the DotaFest esports festival organised by the CyberHSE society. The event was a chance for students of HSE and other Russian universities to immerse themselves in the world of popular video games and dress up as their favourite characters. There was also a round table on the development prospects of esports in Russia and the role of university societies in this effort.

Floating University is a national project to help students and young scientists immerse themselves in Earth science research and undertake an expedition aboard a research vessel. However, anyone interested in taking part must first go through the training and selection process. For those who dream of going on a scientific voyage, there is a winter school co-organised by HSE University.

On April 8-10, HSE University-St Petersburg will hold the fifth conference 'Model United Nations' (MUN). The event will take place offline in English. Both current and prospective students can participate, but you have to apply until March 1 inclusive. Find out what to expect from the conference and how it will go.

The Glinka State Conservatory in Nizhny Novgorod has held a phonetics competition in Russian as a foreign language for Chinese students of the preparatory department. The spectators, jury members, and support team of the competition included HSE University-Nizhny Novgorod students of the Bachelor’s in Foreign Languages and Intercultural Business Communication, Academic Supervisor of the programme Marianna Korenkova, and Chinese language teacher Elena Ammosova. The Chinese students opened the event with performances of famous solo works in Russian.

In February, HSE University welcomed Kypros Giorgallis, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Republic of Cyprus to the Russian Federation. The Ambassador met with HSE University Vice Rector Victoria Panova to discuss ways of establishing academic links between HSE University and universities in Cyprus.

On February 22, the HSE University Faculty of Humanities held a Maslenitsa celebration at the building on Staraya Basmannaya. At the event, which was aimed at helping international students settle in, students learned about the meaning of Maslenitsa (or Pancake Week), enjoyed festive games and attractions, and feasted on pancakes with condensed milk. HSE students from various diasporas also showcased their own traditions for seeing off winter and offered a taste of their national dishes.

At the end of 2022, the results of the Project Competition in Basic Science Research for Intercampus Departments were announced. This was the inaugural competition, and focused on encouraging new research teams at HSE University and developing intercampus cooperation in the field of fundamental research. India is playing a special role on the international stage this year. Apart from chairing the G20, in October the country is hosting the VIII BRICS Competition Conference, which is held every two years. The HSE International BRICS Competition Law and Policy Centre is involved in developing the programme and organising the conference. Alexey Ivanov, Director of the Centre, recently became a member of the International Advisory Board of India's Centre for Competition, Investment and Economic Regulation—CUTS.
