Fortunes, Cards, and Sweets: School of Asian Studies Holds Japanese Bōnenkai Celebration
For a few hours, HSE University transformed into a Japanese enclave in the heart of Moscow as the campus hosted a traditional bōnenkai end-of-year festival. The Musubi Japanese club of the School of Asian Studies invited anyone interested to find out what kadomatsu are, how to make traditional nengajo New Year’s cards, and to take part in some New Year’s traditions they might not be familiar with.

For the second time, the HSE School of Foreign Languages has held a defence of specialised projects developed by fourth-year students of the Bachelor’s Programme in Foreign Languages and Intercultural Communication. Representatives of major companies and organisations that support the school’s project activities gathered to evaluate the projects during a poster session.
First HSE CS x BRICS Ideathon Held at HSE University
On December 8, 2024, HSE’s Pokrovka campus hosted the first HSE CS x BRICS Ideathon, organised by the Hackathon Club of the Faculty of Computer Science and the HSE Multilateral Strategic Projects Office. The event was supported by the BRICS Expert Council–Russia, which endorsed the initiative as part of HSE's activities in the BRICS Network University.
HSE Student among Winners of Yandex Cup 2024
In early December, the finals of the Yandex Cup international programming competition took place in Tashkent (Uzbekistan). The prize, which totalled a record 16 million roubles, was shared among the winners from Russia, Belarus, Japan, the USA, Portugal, and the United Kingdom. Dmitry Rempel, student of the HSE Faculty of Computer Science, won in the Backend track.
Gold, Silver, and Bronze: All Six Teams of the HSE Faculty of Computer Science Earn Medals at ICPC Semi-Final
On December 13–15, 2024, the final round of theNorthern Eurasia Contests (the semi-final of theInternational Collegiate Programming Contest (ICPC)) took place. Six teams from the HSEFaculty of Computer Science (FCS) participated, and each of them won an award. The overall winner was the FCS team Surstrumien Bobra.
Five Representatives of HSE University Win Möbius Contest
The Möbius Contest, established in 1997, aims to identify the best student research works in mathematics and provide financial support to their authors for continuing their scientific work in Russia. An Atmosphere of Friendship and Unity: HSE Hosts First-Ever Ossetian Culture Day
In early December, the HSE Cultural Centre hosted the university’s first-ever Ossetian Culture Day. It was organised by student associations from Ossetian communities at HSE, MSU, Gubkin University, and Plekhanov University. Before the grand concert, guests—including Igor Barskov, Deputy Chairman of the Government of the Republic of North Ossetia–Alania—were invited to sample traditional Ossetian cuisine and participate in a contest to win prizes.
HSE Students Present Anti-Fraud Application at DeFi Hack 2024 Blockchain Hackathon
The grand finale of Sber's international hackathon for Web3 developers, DeFi Hack 2024, concluded with five finalist teams. A total of 145 teams from 31 regions of Russia, as well as Belarus, Bulgaria, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, and Serbia, participated in the competition.
AI on Guard of Ecology: Students from Russia and Belarus Propose New Solutions to Environmental Problems
An international online hackathon dedicated to solving environmental problems was held at HSE University in Nizhny Novgorod. Students employed artificial intelligence and computer vision to develop innovative solutions for image segmentation, predictive modelling (forecasting future events based on data from the past) of emissions and creating chatbots for nature reserves and national parks.
