First HSE International Summer University Begins
Over the course of six weeks, students from 12 countries, including South Korea, China, Turkey, Pakistan, Iran, Afghanistan, the U.S., Norway and others, will attend lectures, participate in seminars and master classes, and study Russian under the supervision of leading HSE instructors.
Giving a welcome speech to Summer University students, HSE Vice Rector Sergei Erofeev said this was the first time the HSE was carrying out the project, which is comparable to the leading foreign practice of organizing summer semesters that give students the opportunity to take the credits back to their 'home' universities.
‘Depending on the duration of the courses, our students will be able to receive between two and 12 credits through the European Credit Transfer and Accumulation System (ECTS). We are certain that thanks to the rich experience in carrying out international summer schools at the HSE with significant elements of multidisciplinarity and with the use of the university’s substantial research and academic resources, the transition from a summer school format to a summer university format will be successful,’ the director of HSE’s centre for special international programmes, Oksana Chernenko, says.
As the Summer University’s organizers said, all 12 courses set in the programme will be conducted in English, and the university includes courses in Russian as a foreign language for varying levels of study – from beginning to advanced. In filling out an application to participate in the Summer University, students selected disciplines that interest them, and an individualized curriculum was created for each student based on this choice. Courses in 2014 are divided by theme into several sections: Political Science and International Relations, Economics, Society and History, and Culture. Cycles of classes are conducted by instructors of the Higher School of Economics who teach similar undergraduate and graduate courses at the HSE, but these classes were adjusted specifically for the Summer University programme.
All classes take place in Moscow at the HSE’s new building at 9-11 Myasnitskaya St. Over 40 students will participate in the HSE Summer University this year. They will have the opportunity to become familiarized with city sites, and participants can also visit museums and exhibitions. Volunteers from the Buddy student club will help foreign students get to know Moscow and the HSE.
