Educational Migration Promotes Russia’s National Interests

Nadezhda Radina, Professor at the HSE Faculty of Humanities in Nizhny Novgorod, studied psychological well-being among foreign students in Russia and presented her findings in a report ‘Educational Migration in the Context of the New Migration Policy of Russia’, which was prepared for the XV April International Academic Conference on Economic and Social Development.

HSE Launches Two International Laboratories together with NES and Skolkovo

The HSE will study Russia’s economic history together with colleagues from the New Economic School (NES). The project with Skolkovo will address problems of law and social development in the contemporary world. International researchers will be involved in both laboratories.

An Excellent Platform for Academic Debate and Public Education

Dr. Marek Dabrowski, CASE Fellow at the CASE — Center for Social and Economic Research in Warsaw, Poland, has participated in every HSE April Conference since 2001, missing just the 2000 inaugural event.  A professor with decades of experience in the field of economics, Dr. Dabrowski’s current areas of expertise range from monetary and fiscal policies and political economies in transition to perspectives on European integration and European Neighborhood Policy. The XV April International Conference on Economic and Social Development

The conference opens on the 1st April 2014 at the HSE with the participation of the World Bank and the IMF. The Deputy Chairman of the Conference Programme Committee Andrei Yakovlev spoke about some of the key sessions, lectures and seminars to look out for.

Nearly 1,800 have registered to attend the XV April International Academic Conference. Registration has ended for the upcoming XV April International Academic Conference on Economic and Social Development, which will be held on April 1-4, 2014. Six countries—Germany, Italy, the USA, Ukraine, Finland, and France—account for almost half of all the foreign reports. Last year, Great Britain, Germany, Italy, the USA, France, and Japan were among the leaders.

The Importance of a Good Diagnosis

Sebastian Galiani, Professor of Economics at the University of Maryland and Visiting Professor at Universidad de San Andres, will deliver a public lecture at the HSE’s XV April International Academic Conference on Economic and Social Development. Russians Respect Doctors and Lawyers

Many Russians, when asked  whether certain occupations, particularly those of a politician or an academic, are prestigious or desirable,will give a different answer depending on whether they are refering to their own attitudes, perceived societal attitudes, or preferred career choices for their children. So Konstantin Fursov and Valentina Polyakova, research fellows at the HSE's ISSEK, found in their study Monitoring Innovative Behaviour in the Russian Population.

Muscovites and Migrants don’t Understand Each Other

The tension between migrants from the North Caucasus and local residents in Russia is due to cultural and value differences. Migrants share collectivist values, while the local population is more individualistic. Olga Verbilovich and Viktoria Galyapina, researchers at the HSE Laboratory for Socio-cultural Research, investigated the specifics of the mutual attitude between migrants and local residents in Moscow and Stavropol Krai through the use of focus groups.

One Person in Two Lives in Debt in Russian Small Towns

Some 45% of residents in Russia’s small towns live with loans, and 23% have problems with repayments. A lack of financial literacy is the main cause of the problem. Formal credit has replaced informal borrowing and lending between community members and local retailers, Grigory Yudin and Ivan Pavlyutkin found in their study 'Debt and the Community: Two Debt-driven Economies of Small Towns'.
