Ali Farazmand, Professor of Public Administration and Policy at Florida Atlantic University has long been interested in issues of public administration, public policy and governance. Ahead of his lecture at the XVII April Conference, Professor Farazmand speaks about his research interests and how he hopes to further develop collaborative relationships with Russian scholars.

Dr. Julián Cárdenas, a Researcher at Freie Universität Berlin, has devoted much of his career to studying business networks. A participant on the ‘Business Networks’ panel at the XVII April International Academic Conference on Economic and Social Development on April 21, he recently agreed to speak with the HSE news service about his research interests, in particular his focus on elite business networks and how they differ around the world.

Deepening Collaboration Supports Study of Innovation and Transition Economics

Three years ago, HSE and Germany’s Halle Institute for Economic Research (IWH) signed a Memorandum of Understanding to cooperate on issues concerning innovation and transition economics. Prof. Dr. Jutta Günther of the University of Bremen, who is heavily involved in the collaborative relationship, will be presenting at the XVII April International Academic Conference on Economic and Social Development at a panel on Science, Technology and Innovation Policy. She recently agreed to speak with the HSE news service about the progress in collaboration between the two universities, her research interests, and some of her favourite places to visit in Moscow.

Dr. Virginia Moreira visited HSE in late January-early February 2016 at the invitation of the Department of Psychology of Personality (School of Psychology of the Faculty of Social Sciences), and taught several classes at the Master’s Programme 'Consulting Psychology. Personology'.

Mapping Social Mechanisms in a Civilized Public Sphere

On March 16, Apostolis Papakostas, Professor of Sociology at Södertörn University in Stockholm, Sweden gave a presentation of his book ‘Civilizing the Public Sphere: Distrust, Trust and Corruption’ at the HSE Laboratory for Comparative Social Research. Examining the interplay between distrust, trust and corruption, this book maps out the social mechanisms that make actors and organizations in the public sphere perform their activities in a civilized manner.

Looking Beyond the Usual Periodization of Soviet History

Alan Barenberg, Associate Professor in the Department of History at Texas Tech University, recently gave a presentation entitled ‘From the Margins to the Home Front: Vorkuta at War’ at a seminar held by the HSE International Center for the History and Sociology of World War II and Its Consequences. In his presentation, he sought to provide insights not only about the role of forced labor in the USSR during the Second World War, but also regarding the relationship between the Gulag and Soviet society more broadly.

On Friday 29th January Andrea Strazzoni, a PhD candidate on Early Modern Philosophy at Erasmus University, Rotterdam and HSE Visiting Fellow gave a seminar at HSE on The Foundation of Science in Early Modern Philosophy: Mental Faculties, Physical Principles and Evident Knowledge.

On 22 January, 2016 Judd Kinzley, Assistant Professor at the Department of History, University of Wisconsin-Madison, USA gave a presentation, ‘Wartime Atrocities and the Historical Legacies of World War II in China’at the academic seminar of the HSE International Center for the History and Sociology of World War II and Its Consequences.

Honorary Lecture by Professor Lawrence Kotlikoff at HSE ICEF

On January 15, Professor Larry Kotlikoff gave a talk on measuring inequality in lifetime spending power within different age cohorts in the USA, net tax rates facing Americans, and current wealth indicators.

'Technology as Such Never Simply Marks Progress'

In his lecture on December 3 at the HSE St Petersburg on 'Progress: A Reconstruction', Professor Peter Wagner (University of Barcelona) raised questions related to the nature of progress and our attitude to it. Professor Wagner is ICREA Research Professor in the Department of Sociological Theory, Philosophy of Law and Methodology of the Social Sciences at the University of Barcelona. He has been cooperating with HSE since 2014. Before his lecture, Editor of HSE English News, Anya Chernyakhovskaya talked to Professor Wagner about the elusive and changing nature of progress.
