‘In America I Was Attacked for Being a Marxist and Here I Was Attacked as a Bourgeois Falsifier of History’

In 2014 the working group of the Department of History of Higher School of Economics in St. Petersburg won the university competition and received institutional support for the international research project ‘Comparative Historical Studies of Empire and Nationalism’. Ronald Grigor Suny is Charles Tilly Collegiate Professor of Social and Political History at the University of Michigan, Emeritus Professor of Political Science and History at the University of Chicago and Senior Research Fellow at the Higher School of Economics in St. Petersburg.  He talks his research interests in history and the International Research Project ‘Comparative Historical Studies of Empire and Nationalism’.

New Technology in Education: the Russian, American and Chinese experience

The HSE University District in Perm hosted the first International Scientific-Practical Conference to discuss the new stage of development of the University−School Cluster, investment in contemporary pre-school education and innovations in education in China and the US. HSE’s Deputy Academic Supervisor, Professor of Economics, Lev Lubimov, Honorary Professor at the Teaching College, Washington University (Seattle) Steven T. Kerr (via online conferencing), Director of the HSE Institute for Educational Studies, Professor Irina Abankina and Reader at the Chinese Academy of Pedagogical Research, Tsian Xiaoyang all took part.

Finding a Balanced Approach on Internet Governance

Peter Major, vice-chairman of the Radiocommunication Advisory Group of the International Telecommunication Union and chairman of the Group on Information Systems of the ITU Radiocommunication Bureau at the United Nations, is one of the world's leading experts in the field of Internet Governance. He recently spoke with the HSE news service about some of these developments, particularly with respect to multi-stakeholder cooperation.

Cosmopolitanism, Exile and World Literature Today

Galin Tihanov, George Steiner Professor of Comparative Literature at Queen Mary, University of London, will deliver a series of three lectures at the Higher School of Economics this week. His most recent research has been on cosmopolitanism, exile, and transnationalism. Professor Tihanov recently sat down with the HSE news service to speak about his research and teaching interests, including his work on Russian literature.

Iftekhar Hasan, Professor of Finance and Economics at Fordham University and Managing Editor of the Journal of Financial Stability, recently led a workshop for fourth-year undergraduate students in the HSE’s Faculty of Economics on ‘Banks and Banking Operations’. Professor Hasan's research interests cover financial institutions, corporate finance, capital markets and entrepreneurial finance, among other areas.

The HSE St Petersburg Laboratory for Internet Studies is hosting a conference on 18-19 September on Social Media and Social Movements. A key speaker at the conference is Robert Ackland, Associate Professor and Deputy Director at the Australian Demographic and Social Research Institute, Australian National University. Esko Akho, former prime minister of Finland who oversaw his country’s accession to the EU gave a talk to students on the new HSE Master’s in Governance of Science, Technology and Innovation programme. He spoke about the problems which can stop an entire country or an individual company from developing successfully.
