On Monday 28th September Bernhard Ganter, Professor of Science at the renowned university TU-Dresden in Germany, co-founder and co-director of the Museum of Mathematics, Erlebnisland-Mathematik,  will give a public lecture at HSE on Mathematics as an Adventure.

Entrepreneurship is About More than Just Money

On September 14 2015, Dr Alina Sorgner will give a talk at the annual meeting of the HSE Laboratory for Entrepreneurial Research on 'Does Entrepreneurship Pay? Empirical Analysis of Incomes of Self-employed, as Compared to Wages of Paid Employees'. Ahead of her visit to HSE Moscow, the young academic gave an interview to HSE English News  Service about variations in entrepreneurship in post-communist countries and about her cooperation with HSE.

Claudio Silva: ‘The Future for Solving Complex Urban Issues Is an Interdisciplinary Approach’

Claudio Silva, Professor of Computer Science and Engineering at the Polytechnic School of Engineering, New York University visited Moscow to take part in the Graduate School of Urban Studies and Planning summer programme, Adaptive City. Professor Silva is a specialist in computer technology and big data. He works on interdisciplinary projects involving biotechnology, neurobiology, physics, ornithology, sports analysis, urban changes and others. Silva has been a major influence on researchers working in big data, for one thing, because of his determination to close the gap between academic research and practical applications.   

‘Teaching Linguistics to Russian Students – A Real Pleasure’

One of the founders of formal semantics, Professor Barbara Partee of the University of Massachusetts Amherst recently celebrated an anniversary at the Higher School of Economics. For approximately 20 years, she has been teaching at various universities in Russia. This year, she took part in the Summer School on Pronouns: Syntax, Semantics, Processing, which was organized by the School of Linguistics at HSE. Professor Partee recently spoke with the HSE news service about why she considers the linguistics programme at HSE to be one of the best in Russia, as well as about the differences she sees between Russian and American students.

Communication Competence Is a Must Today

This semester Olga Matyash, Adjunct Professor at Ivy Tech State College (Indiana, USA), has been a visiting scholar at HSE, teaching courses on interpersonal communication and public speaking at the HSESchool of Integrated Communications (Faculty of Communications, Media and Design). Professor Matyash agreed to speak with the HSE news service to share the secrets of successful public speaking and shed light on the role of communication studies in our life.

International Scholars Reflect on HSE Political Science Conference

The 4th Annual Conference of the International Center for the Study of Institutions and Development (ICSID) ‘Institutions, Elites and Collective Action in the Developing World’ took place at the Higher School of Economics in Moscow on June 30- July 1, 2015. It was preceded by an EACES-HSE Workshop ‘Political Economy of Development: New Challenges and Perspectives’ on June 29, 2015. people attended open lectures by Carlo Ginzburg, a distinguished Italian academic and proponent of microhistory. Ginzburg recently arrived in Moscow at the invitation of the HSE Institute for Theoretical and Historical Studies in the Humanities. 

German Scholar to Speak on Rule of Law and International Cooperation

On June 4, Prof. Dr. Mattias Kumm, Managing Head of the Rule of Law Center at WZB Berlin Social Science Center and Professor of Law at New York University, will deliver a lecture at HSE entitled ‘Liberal Constitutional Democracy 25 Years After the End of the Cold War’, which is sponsored by the HSE Faculty of Social Sciences and the ISEPR Foundation. Professor Kumm, an internationally recognized expert on globalization and the rule of law, spoke briefly with the HSE news service ahead of his lecture on Thursday.
